Job Description: 

The Free Library of Philadelphia and NWON Opportunities seek a part-time Work-Study student to work at the Nicetown-Tioga Branch of the Free Library. A newly installed workforce center in the library has just opened and would like assistance with patrons who are looking for help with job preparedness. 

In order to be eligible, we would want someone who can commit to working each week on Monday and Thursday sometime during the hours of 11:00am and 4pm.

Business majors are preferred, but all are welcome to apply. This is the perfect opportunity to gain hands on valuable professional experience with the staff of the Free Library and NWON Opportunities.

The many branches of the Free Library of Philadelphia system are seeking energetic, self-directed, creative and responsible work study student employees. The library system provides printed and electronic materials; information and reference services and a large variety of programs for adults, seniors, teens and children, as well as their parents and caregivers. 

Some of the Free Library Programs continue to be remote; some are now in person while others are being conducted both in person and online. Program Assistants will work with Branch Managers, Librarians, after school program administrators and specialty staff to assist in providing some of the services that are available to our patrons.  Student employees will be placed in one of 54 library branches or a specialty department of the Parkway Central Library. Responsibilities:

Philadelphia Education Fund Program Support Intern

The Philadelphia Scholars Program assists students who participated in PEF’s College Access Program pay for college by filling the gap between their financial aid package and the cost to attend college, including tuition, mandatory fees, housing, meal plan, and public transportation for commuters. In addition to PEF’s scholarship, the Scholars Program provides access to private scholarships administered by PEF, internship and career readiness workshops, and 1:1 success counseling throughout the year.

JOB DESCRIPTION           Our intern will be a partner to the Senior Manager of the Philadelphia Scholars Program during the very busy summer scholarship season. Their work will help to improve the content and implementation of our programs, maintain essential communications to colleges attended by Scholars, and add to our database of Scholars alumni. I will ensure that the intern has the chance to see how a nonprofit organization works from the inside out. Most interns gain a new perspective on their own college experience, Philadelphia’s public high school system, and higher education in PA.

Free Library Teen Program Assistant

POSITION SUMMARY

We are seeking one or two energetic, responsible interns to join our team.  In this position, you will be expected to assist with our teen program at the Tacony Library in Northeast Philadelphia. We have about 15 to 20 middle schoolers who come to the library to participate in the program, which provides board games, video gaming, karaoke and various other activities. We need an intern or two to assist with monitoring and supervising the teens, as well as interact with them in a positive manner. Interns should have an interest in working with middle-school children.  

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the library employees running the after-school teen program:
    • supervise and monitor teens; redirect them when necessary
    • interact with them in a constructive and friendly manner
    • assist with engaging teens and encouraging use of library resources in the library reading room if we are unable to hold the teen program in the meeting room
    • complete basic clerical tasks if there are no teens or few teens in the library
    • report questions and concerns to librarian

Free Library of Philadelphia- Leamos Tutor & Program Assistant (Spanish Language)

POSITION SUMMARY

The Free Library of Philadelphia’s Languages and Learning Center is searching for a work-study student to serve as a Spanish language tutor and program assistant. We are seeking a kind, organized, patient, and responsible undergraduate student who is interested in supporting adult learners in Philadelphia through one of the library’s adult education programs: Leamos. Leamos is a computer-based literacy program for native-Spanish speaking adults who want to improve their basic literacy (reading/writing) skills in Spanish.

This position requires someone who is a fluent/advanced Spanish speaker (native speakers preferred), as the tutoring, outreach, and program assistance will be largely (if not exclusively) in Spanish.

Work Location: Currently, this program takes place at Lillian Marrero Library (601 W Lehigh Ave, Philadelphia 19133) but may expand to other library locations in the future.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work 5-10 hours per week (Tuesdays/Thursdays 10 am - 12 pm at Lillian Marrero Library, plus flexible hours for program outreach)
  • Provide one-on-one Spanish language support to adult learners in the Leamos program. This includes;
    • Facilitating weekly tutoring sessions (using Leamos created lessons and materials) 
    • Providing technical assistance for any challenges participants have accessing online resources
    • Supporting and celebrating learners’ progress and success. 
  • Create promotional materials and use social media to increase awareness of the library’s Leamos literacy program
  • Research organizations around the city of Philadelphia working with populations that might benefit from Leamos and sharing information
  • Track data and progress of participants and report weekly progress to the program manager

In addition to Leamos Program at The Liilian Marrero Branch there is also need for assistance with the following.

  • working during certain hours we would advertise for Spanish-language computer help
  •  joining our after school program to assist with homework help in English and Spanish 
  •  providing interpretation during monthly programs with Aurora/Culinary Literacy Center (A Taste of Latin American Heritage)

The  (BRIC) at Parkway Central Library is seeking an energetic, responsible work study student to join our team.  In this position, you will be expected to assist job seekers with using PCs and basic web tools. You will also provide computer help and instruction as needed. The BRIC supports entrepreneurs, nonprofits, job seekers, and inventors at every stage, helping to improve their skills through individualized guidance in research, public programs, and curated print and digital resources. The BRIC also assists adults with basic computer skills entering the workforce.

The Rare Book Department of the Free Library of Philadelphia is seeking a work study student to work on-site at the Parkway Central Library. In this position, you will assist the Rare Book Department by working on projects related to the special collections materials in the department and staffing our welcome desk.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Students who accept positions with the Free Library Off Campus Work Study Program will be required to complete the PA State Child Abuse Clearances in order to be permitted to work. There is no cost to the student for the completion of these clearances.

Philadelphia Education Fund- Program Support Intern

Length of Internship: Late May to mid-August. Can be flexible about start and end dates. Approximately 85% remote and 15% in-person
Work Schedule: 24-28 hours/week. Can be somewhat flexible if student has other work or volunteer commitment.

 

The Philadelphia Scholars Program assists students who participated in PEF’s College Access Program pay for college by filling the gap between their financial aid package and the cost to attend college, including tuition, mandatory fees, housing, meal plan, and public transportation for commuters. In addition to PEF’s scholarship, the Scholars Program provides access to private scholarships administered by PEF, internship and career readiness workshops, and 1:1 success counseling throughout the year.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Our intern will be a partner to the Senior Manager of the Philadelphia Scholars Program during the very busy summer scholarship season. Their work will help to improve the content and implementation of our programs, maintain essential communications to colleges attended by Scholars, and add to our database of Scholars alumni. I will ensure that the intern has the chance to see how a nonprofit organization works from the inside out. Most interns gain a new perspective on their own college experience, Philadelphia’s public high school system, and higher education in PA.


SPECIFIC DUTIES

  • Help plan and staff Senior Career Readiness workshop in early June and First Year Experience event for rising first year students in late July
  • Communicate with colleges regarding PEF’s scholarship
  • Research contact information for Scholars alumni and enter data into alumni database
  • Contribute to Scholars newsletter
  • Assist with admin duties (creating name tags, etc.) for PEF fundraiser luncheon late June


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience using Excel or other spreadsheet software and Google’s suite of programs
  • Excellent writer and clear communicator
  • Careful and conscientious about details
  • Enjoys research via internet and analog methods
  • Interest in nonprofit operations, post-secondary education, education finance would be most welcome
  • Eager to learn
  • Experience in creating graphics and flyers for program events a plus
