Work Schedule:
- Hours per week: Approximately 10 - 15 hours/week. Specific hours per week can be flexible depending on student’s work study amount.
- Weekly schedule: The student’s regular schedule will be between the hours of 9 – 5 pm. We will work with students to set a weekly schedule that accounts for their classes and other commitments.
- Interns must be able to work in person. A SEPTA pass will be provided.
Job Description:
The MDO’s Health and Human Services Cluster is looking for a Spring 2025 intern to assist with projects related to the City’s Philly Phlush Public Restroom Pilot. The intern will spend the semester getting a closer look at the operations of government and improving skills related to program implementation, community engagement, and strategic planning. The intern will be supervised by a Senior Project Manager in MDO-HHS.
- Support community engagement in the next neighborhood where the Philly Phlush public restroom pilot will expand to. This could include designing materials, attending meetings with community groups, joining staff at tabling events, and documenting community feedback.
- Support efforts to map existing public restrooms in Philadelphia to inform pilot expansion. This could include participating in meetings with other City stakeholders, helping to create a dataset in Excel, or using the map to identify a list of all potential locations.
- Administer an in-person survey to gather feedback on the three current Philly Phlush public restrooms
- Review materials from NYC and Minneapolis on their city-wide public restroom strategies and investigate other cities doing similar work. Summarize the best practices and recommendations in a written memo.
Draft outline for report to summarize the pilot, theory of change, budget, implementation challenges and successes, and future opportunities.

Candidates must…
- Have work study eligibility or other funding.
- Be able to work in person in Philadelphia during the internship.
- Have strong communication, writing, and research skills and comfort with Microsoft Office.
- Be reliable and dependable.
Students in graduate programs or undergraduate seniors are preferred. Students studying public policy, sociology, government, political science, economics, communications, law, social work, urban studies, or related fields are encouraged to apply. Those with experience working directly with Philadelphia communities are also encouraged to apply.
