Overview:
The Free Library of Philadelphia is a system of 54 neighborhood library branches. Programing in the various neighborhoods actively serves the communities in which they are located to provide in person and virtual support to children, youth, teens, adults and seniors. The mission of the Free Library of Philadelphia is to advance literacy, guide learning, and inspire curiosity. Its vision is to build an enlightened community devoted to lifelong learning.
This Program Assistant position will be a placement at the Cecil B Moore Branch which is very close to the Temple University campus. This branch has a very busy and exciting summer schedule and seeks support in many of the following areas:
Job Responsibilities (All or some of these)
- After school program and summer program assistance for various age groups with homework, technology, math and reading tutoring, sewing, art, dance, chess and cultural programs.
- Computer aid assistance for patrons who are seeking information on job seeking, resume building, email creation and online research.
- Archival work which provides additional resources for online accessibility to historical and educational documents.
- Administrative support for staff and branch managers
- Social media and advertising assistance for branch programs, newsletter and announcements
- Support the branch manager, library supervisors, librarians and administrators by working in areas of the library where patrons of all ages seek instruction, homework help, basic computer skills and workforce development or other tasks to be determined by the branch manager.
- Bi- lingual students are always needed to assist with adult literacy and programing and English as a second language programs.
Qualification for Off-Campus Work-Study Employment
- A Temple Summer work-study award is required for all off-campus work-study positions.
- Possess strong customer service, leadership and communication skills, with an interest in forwarding the various aspects of literacy and librarianship.
- Proficient computer skills.
- Have an interest in serving and interacting with the public, particularly children and teens
- Student must be federal work study eligible
- Excellent organization skills
- Familiarity with Zoom videoconferencing
- Must be willing to use your own computer when and if you are asked to work remotely
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Self-directed and able to work with minimal supervision
- Energetic and eager to tackle new projects and ideas
- Some branches are looking for students with a creative interest or talent that you would like to share with others, particularly children and teens (a handful of examples: crochet/physics/fitness/anime/chess/gaming/writing/reading/drama/language/musical instrument lessons).
- Experience and interest in teaching others (children/teen/adults) how to do crafts, experience or interest in tutoring
- Some locations may need students who speak Spanish at the conversational level
- Some locations may need students who speak Chinese, Mandarin, Cambodian or Vietnamese at the conversational level
- Hours are flexible based on your schedule and the needs of the branch.
Clearances Required
Students who accept positions with the Free Library Off Campus Work Study Program will be required to complete the PA State Child Abuse Clearances to be permitted to work with minors. There is no cost to the student for the completion of these clearances.
