Summer Enrollment

Overview of Qualifying for Federal, State, and Institutional Summer Aid

The academic year at Temple University begins with the fall semester followed by the spring semester, and ends with summer sessions. The summer is considered a “trailer” for the majority of undergraduate and graduate programs at the university. This means that your summer aid primarily consists of funding unused in the prior Fall and Spring semesters, with the exception of Year-Round Pell Grants. This includes offers of summer work-study—see below for details related to the dates students can work over the summer.

Summer 2024 financial aid eligibility is determined based on the information from the 2023-2024 FAFSA application and remaining fiscal year funding. For summer, the 2023-2024 FAFSA must be submitted by June 30, 2024. Summer financial aid will be limited if you have already used your eligibility during the Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 semesters.

To be considered for summer financial aid, you must meet the federal and university aid eligibility requirementsPlease note that satisfactory academic progress (SAP) is reviewed after spring grades are transcripted and can impact summer financial aid eligibility. These determinations may occur during summer terms. Do to the condensed nature of summer sessions, we cannot guarantee a SAP review prior to the end of summer add/drop sessions.

If you complete your degree program (i.e., graduate) and then enroll in summer classes as a non-degree student, you will not qualify for summer financial aid.

We automatically review all students enrolled for the summer session(s) that have the 2023–2024 FAFSA on file with Temple University for all forms of available financial aid. Summer financial aid is limited and will be awarded to students on a first-come, first-processed basis.

You must be approved to take courses at a domestic institution during the summer. Eligibility is confirmed through the submission of the Permission to Complete a Course at Another Institution After Matriculation, which must be approved by your academic adviser. The adviser approval process can be intitiated via TUPortal

Once your documentation has been received and reviewed, any eligible funding will be awarded, disbursed, and transferred to your host institution according to the instructions on the Consortium Agreement. Information on summer funding is available on the Summer Financial Aid page of this website.

Summer Courses at a Different Institution

You must be approved to take courses at a domestic institution during the summer. Eligibility is confirmed through the submission of the Permission to Complete a Course at Another Institution After Matriculation, which must be approved by your academic adviser. The adviser approval process can be intitiated via TUPortal

Once your documentation has been received and reviewed, any eligible funding will be awarded, disbursed, and transferred to the other institution according to the instructions on the Consortium Agreement. Information on summer funding is available on the Summer Financial Aid page of this website.

If you are taking classes at both Temple and an outside institution at the same time, then your aid will be disbursed to your Temple student account to pay your Temple charges first. Excess funding can then be transferred to the other institution. If the host institution requires your courses to be paid upon registration, then you may submit an official invoice showing that all charges have been paid in full to have the excess funding processed as refund instead of being transferred to your other institutions, provided no other Temple charges have been assessed.

Graduate Students Beginning a New Program in Summer

If you are a new graduate student who is matriculating in Summer I or II 2024, be sure to update the 2023-2024 FAFSA after May 1 to reflect you are now a graduate student. SFS must receive a copy of the corrected FAFSA before the end of the summer session to issue an aid offer.

Advanced Master of Social Work Students

Students enrolling in the Advanced Master of Social Work program will begin courses in Summer I 2024. Due to the nature of this specific program, you must file the 2024-2025 FAFSA as a graduate student to receive aid. Your FAFSA must be updated before the end of the Summer sessions for SFS to issue a financial aid offer for the Summer terms. Any changes submitted after the end of Summer will result in federal aid only being issued for the Fall and Spring semesters.
