Athletic Aid Appeal Procedures for Student-Athletes at Temple University
Student-athletes may submit a formal appeal when their athletic aid has been reduced, canceled, or not renewed. The student-athlete must submit a written request to the university’s designated Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) within seven (7) business days of receiving notification of the reduction, cancelation, or non-renewal of their athletic aid. The appeal should include the following:
- The student-athlete’s name,
- Their Temple University ID (TUid),
- Their year in school,
- Their sport,
- The reason they believe the reduction, cancellation, or non-renewal is unfair or inequitable, and
- Whether they are requesting a formal hearing (which consists of an in-person or virtual hearing) or wish to proceed without a formal hearing (which involves a review of documents).
See Options 1 and 2 below for additional details. Any relevant documentation should be included in the communication. The FAR will share all information with Financial Aid Appeals Committee members (see below for committee makeup).
Any student-athlete who fails to submit a written appeal within this timeframe forfeits the opportunity to appeal. The appeal options are set forth below:
Option 1 (document review only)
The FAR will notify the appropriate members of the Temple University Athletic Department and provide seven (7) business days for a response, should they elect to respond. Upon review of the appeal and response from the athletic department, the committee may request additional information or ask questions of either party. The committee will decide – by a majority rule – that either a) there is no change to the contested scholarship status or b) the scholarship status will be implemented at the level prior to the most recent change (e.g., last academic year/semester) based on NCAA bylaws and institutional policies. The chairperson will issue the committee's decision to both parties in writing as soon as possible. The committee's decision is final.
Option 2 – Formal Hearing (document review with hearing)
Working with all parties involved, the FAR will schedule a time and location (in person or virtual, as decided by the FAR), then notify both the student-athlete and appropriate members of the Temple University Athletic Department. The athletic department will be provided seven (7) business days to submit a written response for the committee to review prior to the hearing. At the hearing, each side will be provided the opportunity to present to the Financial Aid Appeals Committee. The committee will decide – by a majority rule – that either a) there will be no change to the contested scholarship status or b) the scholarship status will be implemented at the level prior to the most recent change (e.g., last academic year/semester) based on NCAA bylaws and institutional policies. The chairperson will issue the committee's decision to both parties in writing as soon as possible. The committee's decision is final. If the student-athlete does not attend the hearing, they will not be afforded the opportunity to present their arguments to the committee. Failure on the part of the student-athlete to attend will not impact the athletic department personnel’s opportunity to present their argument.
The Financial Aid Appeals Committee shall consist of the following three members:
1. The Director of Student Financial Services (or designee),
2. The current Faculty Athletics Representative (or designee), and
3. One member from the Provost’s leadership team (e.g., Vice President for Student Affairs, Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies, or Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, Assessment, and Institutional Research).
No committee members or designees may be staff members in or representatives of Temple University Athletics Department.
