Financial aid awarding begins by creating standard cost of attendance (COA) budgets for all students. These budgets reflect modest yet adequate expense patterns of Temple students. Temple will calculate undergraduate and graduate student’s COA to reflect total costs for the school year, which is comprised of the fall and spring semesters (summer is separate). All students can view their specific cost of attendance on their financial aid offer found in the Costs and Aid tab of their TUportal account.
Cost of attendance components for students registered at least half-time may include
- tuition and fees;
- the cost of housing and food (or living expenses for students who do not contract with the school for room and meal plan);
- the cost of books, supplies, transportation, loan fees, and miscellaneous expenses (including a reasonable amount for the documented cost of a personal computer);
- an allowance for child care or other dependent care;
- costs related to a disability; and/or
- costs for eligible study-abroad programs (provided by Temple’s Education Abroad office).
Note: Students registered less than half-time (five credits or less for undergraduates, and four credits or less for graduate students) have reduced COA budgets. Reductions in the budget are made once our office is notified that you are attending less than half time and may affect any offered or disbursed financial aid, including grants, loans and work study.
Utilize the university’s tuition calculator to create an estimated student account statement to include tuition, university fees, housing and food budget for the year. You can also input estimated financial aid figures, personal savings and other resources into the tuition calculator tool. This estimate of direct costs may be lower than the budget on the aid offer because the aid offer includes indirect costs that students may need to account for in their overall budget. Each student’s individual costs and aid will vary, so we recommend reviewing the full aid offer on the Costs and Aid tab of TUportal.
Direct university charges (charges that are billed directly to students):
Estimated indirect expenses (charges incurred by most students, but not billed directly by the university) categories:
- Books and supplies
- Off-campus room and board
- Transportation and personal expenses
Temple uses estimated budgets in the initial determination of need. Once the Board of Trustees confirms the upcoming year’s tuition and fees in mid-July, the Office of Student Financial Services may adjust students’ COA based on the newly published figures.
Undergraduate Programs
Below are the components included in the Undergraduate Cost of Attendance. The example below compares in-state and out-of-state tuition for the College of Liberal Arts and the Fox School of Business for the 2024-2025 Fall and Spring semester, based on anticipated costs. The exact tuition rates are set in early July.
